A zone is based on the average coldest night of the year over 1991–2020. It helps you judge whether a perennial, shrub, or tree can live through your winters. It says nothing about when spring warms up, so it is not a planting calendar.

Your hardiness zone
A hardiness zone tells you how cold winters get, which matters for perennials. It does not tell you your frost dates; for those, look up the NOAA 1991–2020 climate normals for a station near you, or ask your state’s Extension service.
